Meet the people that make UBS tick above and below the water...
We have a great team here at UBS Dive Center , all highly qualified staff with years of experience. All our divers hold Dive Instructor qualifications.
Tony Brunn (Owner) was born in San Diego , California and began diving there in 1982. He claims to know every inch of the La Jolla coastline as well as the Channel Islands . Tony moved to northern California in 1986 and taught diving with Humboldt State University . Tony received his instructor certification in 1990. Getting tired of struggling into thick wetsuits, he moved to the warm waters of the British Virgin Islands in 1991. An explorer at heart, he has been known to be dragged behind boats around remote cays and islands. He's the expert at finding those "unusual" nooks and crannies to tuck into.
Kathryn Brunn (Owner) began diving in 1990, diving mostly rivers and quarries in England and spending summers diving in Malta . She arrived in the BVI in 1994 and realized there was something to see beneath the waves. Kathryn received her Instructor certification in 1994 here in the BVI. She now holds a Master Scuba Diver Trainer ranking with PADI. Kathryn is very patient and is extremely successful in getting even the most hesitant students into the water. Once in the water, she stays with her guests, giving encouragement and building confidence. She also works with children as young as eight years old, starting them off in the swimming pool at the Tamarind Club Hotel nearby.
Jai Williams (Diver Extraordinaire) began working for UBS in June 2001. He came to UBS as a non-diver but an avid surfer. He quickly completed his open water and advanced open water certifications and is now a Divemaster. Jai's initial roles were to help and eventually take over some of Tony's responsibilities related to the commercial diving side of our business. In the early days, this included cleaning the bottom of boats, underwater surveys and inspections and chase calls for various charter companies. As UBS Dive Center has grown, so has Jai's role. He still runs the commercial diving almost single handedly, but he can sometimes be found running a snorkel tour. Jai is responsible for all the UBS Dive Boats, keeping them not only running but also looking pretty. He makes sure that our dive tanks are filled and he does most of the rental deliveries and pick-ups. Jai is one of those special people the islands refer to as a "Belonger" and we are really glad that he has chosen to belong with us at UBS Dive Center .
James Sanderson (Dive Instructor) received his Open water certification while on vacation in Egypt in August 2001 and completed the Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver courses within two months. You could say he really caught the dive bug! While on a live-aboard dive trip to the Red Sea the following March, he dived the SS Thistlegorm and got hooked on wreck diving which remains his special passion. He has set himself the goal of diving the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga at Bikini Atoll, maybe next year! Most of his early diving and training was in the south-west UK, but like all us cold water divers, he headed for warmer waters and decided on Florida as the location to train as a PADI instructor due to the wrecks and the weather! His first professional diving job was in Grand Cayman and he later moved onto work in Cyprus before we scooped him up and imported him to the BVI. James joined us here at UBS Dive Center for the start of the 2004 season.
