Meet the people that make UBS tick above and below the water...
We have a great team here at UBS. Our experienced and highly-trained instructors have certified over 3000 divers, ranging from Open Water Diver all the way up to Assistant Instructor, including muliple Specialties and Emergency First Response.
Between them, they have over 39 years of diving experience in the British Virgin Islands and are intimately acquainted with all the dive sites and their inhabitants.
They are all Emergency First Responders and Oxygen Providers too, so you're in safe hands with us!
Our instructors work very hard to give you the safest and most enjoyable experience out on the water. If you think they did a good job and would like to show your appreciation by leaving a gratuity, it is customary to tip 10-20% for dive services here in the BVI.
Tony Brunn (Owner, Open Water Scuba Instructor) was born in San Diego , California and began diving there in 1982. He claims to know every inch of the La Jolla coastline as well as the Channel Islands . Tony moved to Northern California in 1986 and taught diving with Humboldt State University . Tony received his Instructor certification in 1990. Getting tired of struggling into thick wetsuits, he moved to the warm waters of the British Virgin Islands in February 1992. He worked for Blue Water Divers for four years before starting UBS Dive Center in January 1996. An explorer at heart, he has been known to be dragged behind boats around remote cays and islands. He's the expert at finding those "unusual" nooks and crannies to tuck into. UBS uses several of Tony's secret sites as dive sites for both advanced and novice divers. Ask before you make your booking and we will let you know which anchorage you will need to be at to explore Tony's secret sites.
Kathryn Brunn (Owner, Master Scuba Diver Trainer) began diving in 1990, diving mostly rivers and quarries in England and spending summers diving in Malta . She arrived in the BVI in 1994 and realized there was something more to see beneath the waves. Kathryn received her Instructor certification in 1994 here in the BVI. She now holds a Master Scuba Diver Trainer ranking with PADI. Kathryn is very patient and is extremely successful in getting even the most hesitant students into the water. Once in the water, she stays with her guests, giving encouragement and building confidence. She also works with children as young as ten years old. Kathryn is not only a patient dive instructor but is fun to be around and knows the history of most of the BVI Islands.
Dawn Clerkson (IDC Staff Instructor) hails from Kent in South East England. After catching the dive bug while vacationing in Cyprus in 1999 then taking her Open Water course in the Red Sea, Egypt, she left the corporate lifestyle and the bright lights of London behind for a trip to Australia in 2001 where she worked her way up to Instructor level. She then worked for several dive centers and live-aboards on the Great Barrier Reef in northern Queensland before leaving Australia for the Gulf of Thailand where she spent the next year instructing out of Koh Samui. She moved to the British Virgin Islands in March 2004. Her most memorable dive experiences are the wreck of the SS Yongala in Australia, the wreck of the President Coolidge in Vanuatu, the Ribbon Reefs to the north of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, kelp diving in the Poor Knights Islands of New Zealand, the pristine waters of the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia and several encounters with whale sharks in the Gulf of Thailand. Dawn’s favourite dive site in the BVI is ……….well you’ll just have to dive with her to find out!! Dawn joined UBS Dive Center in October of 2006. We were very lucky to convince her to join our team from one of the other BVI dive operators! She is a very calm and patient dive leader, perfect for novice and experienced divers alike.
